Comprising twenty individual posters, the exhibition was mounted by the Stiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SEDDiktatur, a German foundation established in 1998 to provide information about Germany’s second dictatorship and promote discussion of its impact in Germany and abroad.
It has been made available to the University by the Discipline of German Studies in cooperation with the Goethe Insitut.

From Peaceful Revolution to German Unity is on display until 31 August 2010 in the entrance foyer of the Barr Smith Library during normal Library opening hours.

The documentary film Driven to Diffraction tells the remarkable story of William Henry Bragg and his son William Lawrence Bragg. Part human interest story, part science lesson, part historical journey of discovery, the film weaves a spell of enchantment around the tale of two shy men who join the ranks of the most important scientists of the twentieth century.

From origins in Adelaide, their international contributions have been legion and across many areas: early work on wireless telegraphy, radioactivity, and acoustic range finding of artillery on the battlefields of the Great War, to their celebrated development of X-Ray crystallography, for which they won the Nobel Prize in 1915, the only father-son team ever to have done so.

Their work made possible an astonishing list of breakthroughs including Watson and Crick’s discovery of the structure of DNA, radio therapy for cancer, solid state electronics, modern pharmaceuticals, superconductivity and radio astronomy.

‘Full Circle’ is a mixed media exhibition exploring transformation of the psyche through a series of intricately crafted objects.
Catherine Buddle, Adelaide-based artist and graphic designer, has a background in the biological sciences and scientific illustration. Skills acquired and refined through this experience are evident in her meticulous artwork.

With Summon, you can quickly and easily search, discover and access reliable and credible Library content – print and electronic books, single articles to entire e-journals, newspapers, theses and more.

Once found it’s only one step to the full text of articles and ebooks, or finding books on the shelf.

You can limit your search to full text and/or scholarly or peer reviewed publications only. Not interested in newspaper articles? Then simply exclude them by clicking on Exclude Newspaper Articles. Refine your search results further by content type, subject terms, publication date or library location (for physical items).

Search results can be easily formatted and citations exported to bibliographic software like EndNote or cut-and-paste into a Word document, printed or emailed.

ChemSpider is a free access service providing a structure centric community for chemists. Providing access to millions of chemical structures and integration to a multitude of other online services, ChemSpider is the richest single source of structure-based chemistry information.[http://www.chemspider.com/]

If you are an iPhone user, or use a phone with a browser, I suggest you point it to the new ChemSpider Mobile at http://cs.m.chemspider.com . There you’ll see a simple interface, shown below, that allows you to search across our database of almost 25 million chemical entities based on chemical name systematic, trivial or trade, registry number etc and retrieve a list of intrinsic properties, a list of predicted properties, a list of associated identifiers, with links to Wikipedia if available, and a Google based search for the chemical based, for now, on the associated InChIKey.

We are also working on providing access to ChemSpider SyntheticPages in the same way and the first screen shot is shown at the bottom. Things are always changing and, I believe, for the better.

The Friends of the University of Adelaide Library invite you to a free author event with Lee Gutkind on Thursday 10 June 2010 at 6.00 for 6.30pm.

Venue: Ira Raymond Exhibition Room, Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide

Lee Gutkind, the Godfather behind Creative Nonfiction, is also a real-life father – what some people call an ‘old new dad’ because he was in his middle forties when his son Sam was born. For five summers Sam and Lee travelled the world together, moving around spontaneously in the spirit of the Grateful Dead’s song Truckin’.

Rock and roll inspired them.

They have written a book about their journeys and their conflicts along the way: a real-life portrait of bonding, personal conflict and adventure.

Father and son will discuss writing and living, Truckin’ with Sam, and the essence of the Creative Nonfiction genre.
